Roofing in Inola, Where Lots Run to Acres

Inola is a small Rogers County town of about 1,900 people, and its name comes from a Cherokee word meaning "Black Fox." Many families here live on properties of 1 to 20 acres, according to the town's own description. That changes roof work a little: there may be a house, a shop and a barn to think about, all exposed to the same open Oklahoma weather.

This site is a referral service. We put you in touch with one registered roofer who serves Inola and the countryside around it. They come out for a free inspection, then write down what the job needs and what it costs, so you can decide without pressure.

Inola Homes, Lots and Rooflines

Inola was tiny for much of the last century, with only 294 residents in 1950, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. A revival began in the 1950s as people moved out and drove to jobs across the Tulsa area. By 1980 the town had 1,550 residents, and it stood near 1,900 in 2020. The town still calls itself a bedroom community.

The 2020 count found 773 housing units and 682 households, with 11.8% of units vacant. That vacancy rate is higher than in the bigger suburbs, which suggests a mix of older houses and rural property rather than packed new subdivisions.

On acreage, the house is often only one roof of several. Ask your roofer to look at a detached garage, workshop or pole barn during the same visit. Pricing them together can save a second trip.

What Inola Homeowners Can Request

  • Roof replacement. A full strip-down and new roof for a house that has outlived patching, with decking checked before anything goes back on.
  • Storm and hail damage. Rural roofs have little shelter from trees or neighbors. After a storm, a roofer can photograph and record any damage.
  • Metal roof replacement. A natural fit when you want the house to match a metal shop or barn on the same property.
  • Shingle roof replacement. Architectural or impact-rated shingles, often the most affordable way to re-roof a country home.
  • Roof repair. Spot fixes for wind-lifted shingles, flashing gaps and leaks around vents when the rest of the roof is sound.

The 2015 Tornado and Inola's Storm Season

On the night of May 16, 2015, an EF2 tornado traveled about 16 miles, from southwest of Oneta to a point 3.5 miles west-southwest of Inola. At its widest it measured up to 1,000 yards, according to the NWS tornado database. The National Weather Service office for the Tulsa area files it under the "2015 May 16 Broken Arrow/Inola Tornado Event."

Hail is the more regular visitor. The NWS places the local hail peak from mid-April through mid-May, with a smaller run in November. Open land means wind and hail reach roofs with nothing in the way, so a quick look from the ground after a big storm is time well spent. Take photos, note the date and, if something looks off, ask for an inspection. A storm alone does not mean the roof failed.

Permits for an Inola Roof

Inola does not post a building-permit page on its website, and we have not found a written rule about re-roofing. So the safe approach is simple: ask your roofer and Inola City Hall (918-543-2430) before work begins.

City Hall is at 900 James Ct. If your property sits outside town limits on a rural road, mention that when you call, since the answer can depend on where the line falls. Whatever you learn, keep a note of who you spoke with and when.

What an Inola Roof Might Cost

No one publishes roofing prices just for Inola. The best public figures are online estimators covering the Tulsa area, which give rough starting points:

  • Metal, whole roof. Homeyou's 2026 estimator puts a complete metal roof at $25,500 to $39,600.
  • Metal, installed. Handoff's 2026 figure runs from $6.44 to $13.92 a square foot.
  • Asphalt on a 1,000 sq ft roof. ContractorPlus (2026) shows $4,625 to $9,250 with tear-off and underlayment, around $6.61 a square foot.
  • Asphalt shingles, general. Homeyou (2026) lists roughly $5 to $6 a square foot.

Rural factors can move the number. A long gravel drive may affect where the dumpster sits, and outbuildings add square footage. Because Inola sits at the edge of the area this site serves, ask whether travel is built into the price. Run your numbers through the cost calculator and read the roof replacement cost guide before the inspection.

A Local Option for Inola

The town's website calls Inola the "Hay Capital of the World," thanks to the high quality of its Bluestem Prairie hay, and Inola Hay Days has been celebrated every year since 1960. Long before hay, the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway laid track here in 1889, and coal strip mining began before statehood in 1907.

  • A roofer who drives these roads. Your request goes to someone who already works Inola and its rural edges.
  • Work that fits Hay Days. Ask for a schedule that does not collide with the town's biggest weekend.
  • Respect for the property. Good roofers protect hayfields, gardens and fence lines from stray nails during cleanup.
  • Free to ask. The inspection and estimate cost nothing.

Today Inola mixes farm country with industry. The Sofidel tissue plant opened in October 2020, and the Jim Summerlin and Inola River/Rail industrial parks reach the Verdigris navigation channel. The town even keeps a page on its protests against the Black Fox nuclear plant, proposed in 1973 and abandoned in 1982. Weekends center on Fleming Park, Cico Park on Main Street, the Bill Morgan Sports Complex and the Ingersoll Public Library.

Good to Know in Inola

Do I need a permit to re-roof in Inola?

We have not found a written Inola rule either way, so we will not guess. Ask your roofer, then call Inola City Hall at 918-543-2430 to confirm before the tear-off starts. If you live outside town limits, mention that on the call, because different rules may apply.

Can the same roofer handle my barn or shop roof?

Often, yes. Many roofers who work rural Rogers County re-roof outbuildings as well as houses, especially in metal. Ask during the inspection, and request a separate line on the estimate for each building so you can decide on them one at a time.

Was Inola hit by the 2015 tornado?

The NWS database shows the EF2 of May 16, 2015, ending about 3.5 miles west-southwest of Inola after a 16-mile path. The weather service groups it with Broken Arrow as one tornado event. In most years, though, spring hail is the more likely reason to call a roofer.

Will a roofer come out this far?

Inola sits near the edge of the area this site serves, but it is inside it. Use the area check above to confirm. When the roofer calls, ask how travel affects scheduling, especially during the spring hail rush, when crews across the region get busy.

Who handles my insurance claim after a storm?

You open and manage the claim with your insurer, or hire a licensed public adjuster to do it. Your roofer's role is to inspect and record the damage they find. Be wary of anyone who offers to absorb your deductible, since HB 1940 (2022) made that illegal in Oklahoma.
