The May 21, 2024 storm hit close to home. The Storm Prediction Center logged golf-ball hail, 1.75 inches, west-northwest of Verdigris, 1.25-inch hail to the west and 1.00-inch hail in town. Wind that day blew down several trees and snapped large limbs just north-northwest of Verdigris, which matters on wooded lots where branches hang over roofs.
On March 30, 2016, an EF2 tornado ran about 20 miles from south of Skiatook to just north of Verdigris. It was up to 800 yards wide and injured 7 people, according to the National Weather Service. The hail peak in this region runs from mid-April to mid-May.

Verdigris runs its own permits through the town offices at 25757 S Highway 66. Don't be thrown by the mailing address, which reads "Claremore": the Town of Verdigris, not Claremore, is the office to call. The town lists a standard Building Permit and a "Minor Building Permit" for HVAC, water heaters and repairs.

A Local Option for Verdigris
Verdigris takes its name from the Verdigris River, which French traders named in the late 1700s. Its post office opened on March 12, 1880, and closed in 1954, yet the town didn't incorporate until June 6, 1980. Between 1922 and 1924, the Lock Joint Pipe Company plant here made the pipe for the Spavinaw Lake project that brings water to the Tulsa area.
By the 1990s the town had three industrial parks, and CF Industries runs a nitrogen fertilizer plant there on about 800 acres. Route 66 still runs straight through, between Catoosa and Claremore.
